This morning our house was roused at 5:30 by the phone. It was Rebeca's mom panicked about the tsunami that was threatening Hawaii. We had heard about it last night, but didn't think too much about it. We're so far inland that there really was never a threat. Obviously the news was making it sound pretty bad. Never mind those poor Chileans!
Spent the day watching the news off and on. Pretty amazing that Mother Nature. Seeing the water recede in Hilo Bay was fascinating. But nothing happened. Of course that's good news, but it may have been neat to see a little bit of action. Not so anyone was hurt, but just a small big wave would have been cool.
Most of the coastal communities were evacuated and that means that the huge homeless populations on these beaches were also evacuated to higher ground. My little town was like one big tailgate party earlier today. There were even people camped out in the hallways of my high school. Crazy shit. It's amazing to see trucks and vans full of people just waiting in various parking lots. And to think that if a tsunami did hit hard, most of these people would be even more house-less than they were before! Depressing depressing depressing.
There were also reports of looting. People taking advantage of the empty homes and robbing them. Bachi for sure!! I didn't think local people were like that. Bastards.
So anyway, it's all good in the hood. At least we're now well stocked with water. :)
